College Advising

Undergraduate students work with College academic advisors who are specialists in the general education requirements of their respective colleges, as well as university requirements.

You'll meet with your College academic advisor to develop and discuss your overall academic objectives and all related requirements. College academic advisors can help navigate enrollment and withdrawal, academic difficulty and disqualification, and understanding university policies. They are often your first point of contact, can connect you with various campus partners, and will refer you to others as needed. Each College advising team is led by a Dean of Academic Advising.

The role of a College advisor

A college advisor can: A college advisor cannot:
Help plan your general education courses and help you understand university requirements and policies. Tell you how a course satisfies major or minor requirements. (Your Department Advisor is there for those questions.)
Teach you about enrollment tools (like WebReg, the two-pass system, and your degree audit) Manage enrollment (waitlists, pre-authorization requests, prerequisite clearance) for courses in a department. They cannot get you off a waitlist!
Give you information about many campus resources like tutoring, student organizations, and experiential learning opportunities. Look up your financial aid information (that's protected by the Financial Aid & Scholarships office) or your bill (that's Student Financial Solutions)
Discuss options if you are experiencing academic difficulty Tell your professor to change your grade. (Instructors have sole discretion for grading.)
Guide you through the petition process if you have transfer coursework you want applied for general education and university requirements. Decide how your coursework will be transferable for credit to UC San Diego (that's Admissions) or if it is equivalent to a major course (faculty in the departments decide that).
