Understanding Math Acronyms

We know this can be confusing to navigate! Below are some key terms to understand the math landscape at UC San Diego.

 

MDA: Math Diagnostic Assessment

Some new incoming students will be asked to complete this free, online assessment between April 1 - May 15. Watch your email for messages from Math Testing & Placement to see if you need to take the MDA.The MDA helps to determine your current readiness for college-level math. After students complete the MDA, they receive an email from Math Testing and Placement with a personalized review plan to help them to prepare to take the MPE (when needed). 


MDTP: CSU/UC Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP)

MDTP provides assessments and resources to secondary and post-secondary (UC and CSU) students.  Students who take the MDA might receive an individualized learning plan with lessons from the MDTP Learning Modules.  The MDTP Learning Modules are free and can be used for independent review for students who must take the MPE. Take advantage of this free resource as you prepare for the MPE! Watch your email for messages from Math Testing & Placement.


MPE: Math Placement Exam

This is the official placement exam for UC San Diego. Students who need a math placement for their major must take the MPE by June 1 if they do not have a placement from AP/IB tests or transfer credit.  Follow all guidance you receive via email from Math Testing & Placement.Take this exam seriously and try your best as this determines your initial placement and cannot be retaken. The result determines where you start on the UCSD Math Path.

This is the team of UCSD staff that manages student placement and helps answer your questions about math placement for your specific situation.


PUP-E: Place-Up Pathway Exam

For students with MATH 2 placement, you must pass the PUP-E to move on to the next course. This is a free exam offered on campus, in person, each quarter at a specific time. You must register to take the exam. Free practice tests are offered at a specific time. Read more about the PUP-E.
