Mental Health (CAPS): Alignment Between a Student Centric Community of Caring and Engagement: Supporting Students
Presented by Reina Juarez, Director of UC San Diego Counseling and Psychological Services and Ashley Metoyer, Triton CORE Consultant.
As the campus community continues to adjust to returning to pre-pandemic levels, supporting the students’ academic success, personal development, and well-being continues to be an imperative, now more than ever. For this, we need to understand, recognize, and assist those students presenting with an actual or potential mental health hardship, grounded on a student centric model that cultivates a culture of caring. This requires an active commitment to students’ welfare, promoting growth mindsets, and reducing the stigma and shame connected to mental health issues to address them as a collective.
This presentation focused on how to identify students who might need a wellness check, warning signs, and how to reach out, offer help and resources, in a stepped care system that ranges from self-help, peer support to professional help. In the end, mental health is a community endeavor to support flourishing living and learning environments.
